Why We Use "Player Selection" in addition to "Tryouts"
The words we use matter. They set the tone for expectations, frame our values, and define the culture we want to create. At our RVC, we intentionally use the term "Player Selection" and not just "tryouts" because it better reflects our purpose-driven approach to building elite teams and fostering individual growth. Here's why:
Focused on Results, Not Just Participation
"Tryouts" by definition, often imply an open opportunity where anyone can give it a shot, with the focus being on the chance to play rather than the results we aim to achieve. "Player Selection" shifts the narrative. It underscores that we are forming a competitive, championship-driven team, not just assembling players. Our process isn’t about who tries the hardest for a single day but about identifying players who have the skill, dedication, and mindset to excel in a high-performance environment.
We hate losing more than we love winning—but we also deeply value progress. Player Selection is about building a team that not only seeks championships but also celebrates growth, resilience, and excellence every step of the way.
Champions Are Built Outside the Comfort Zone
A "tryout" may suggest a more casual process, but "Player Selection" signals something more purposeful and challenging. Our focus is on selecting players who are ready to be pushed outside their comfort zones, both for their benefit and for the benefit of the team as a whole. We’re not simply offering a safe haven where players can feel good without growing. Instead, we’re crafting an environment where they will be stretched, challenged, and ultimately rise to their full potential.
Greatness comes at a cost, and it won’t always be comfortable—but if embraced, the journey will be worth it.
Building a Purpose-Driven Team
We aren’t just looking for talent; we’re looking for the right fit. Our goal is to assemble a roster of players who bring out the best in each other, foster a unique culture, and develop together into something greater than the sum of their parts.
This approach allows us to create a high-performance environment that fosters lasting mental toughness, grit, passion, and integrity. These traits aren’t just for the game; they carry players through life.
A Culture That Lasts a Lifetime
Our focus isn’t limited to trophies and championships, though those are important. We are equally invested in shaping character. Through dedication, sportsmanship, hard work and resilience, our athletes learn lessons that reach far beyond the court. The long-term impact of our philosophy and culture, is designed to create a foundation that serves players not just during their athletic careers but throughout their entire lives.
At our RVC, players learn an essential truth about life: it doesn’t get easier. But through our culture, they’ll be equipped to handle challenges better. To handle hard well.
Commitment and Accountability
"Tryouts" can sometimes feel transactional—as though showing up and giving it your best effort for one or two sessions is enough. "Player Selection" clarifies that making the team requires more than talent or a one-time burst of effort. It requires commitment. Choosing to be part of this team means counting the cost, showing up consistently, and giving your full effort every single day. We demand accountability because we believe that high standards develop not only elite athletes but also remarkable individuals.
We aren't for Everyone
We understand that our approach may not resonate with every player or family. That’s okay. "Player Selection" acknowledges that we are not simply running a program where everyone’s goals are the same. We are building a team for those who are ready to give their all and fully commit to our culture of excellence. If chosen, you're not just joining a team—but stepping into a culture designed to help you succeed in the game and in life.
Not Easy, but Worth It
We won’t pretend this process is easy. It’s not meant to be. But for those who see value in pushing themselves, in growing under pressure, and in striving for greatness, the rewards of being part of this team are immeasurable. "Player Selection" reflects this reality and sets clear expectations from the outset.
Preparing Players for More Than Just the Game
Life is difficult. Challenges are inevitable. Winning is hard. But the players we select are prepared not just for the technical and physical demands of the game but also for the mental toughness required to overcome obstacles both on and off the court. Our philosophy teaches players how to rise to the occasion, no matter what life throws at them.
Why Language Matters
The difference between "Player Selection" and just "tryouts" goes beyond semantics—it's a reflection of culture and purpose. "Player Selection" embodies our mission to instill core values like resilience, dedication, passion, and teamwork. We’re not just developing athletes; we’re shaping future leaders. By choosing intentional language, we communicate our philosophy and set clear expectations for what it means to join our team.
If you're ready to embrace a program that challenges you to grow, pushes past your limits, and values progress as much as success, we invite you to begin your journey with our Player Selection for the upcoming season. This is your chance to earn a place on one of our Teams. The path won’t be easy, but the rewards will make every effort worthwhile.

Updated Travel Policy
Starting in the 2025-2026 season, we are updating our Travel Policy to align more closely with standard practices in competitive travel team sports. Previously, travel fees were bundled into club fees, but moving forward, families will manage and cover their player’s travel expenses directly.
This change is designed to give families greater flexibility and control over travel arrangements. You’ll now have the freedom to customize bookings to suit your preferences, take advantage of loyalty programs, or use rewards points to help reduce costs. This approach allows you to tailor the travel experience to meet your unique needs while ensuring your player can fully participate in team events.
As part of this change, parents will also be responsible for transporting players to and from the venue each day. Additionally, families will cover the travel-related expenses of the coaching staff, including flights, accommodations, and ground transportation.
We will provide more detailed information about travel expectations and responsibilities, which will also be outlined in the player contract. We’re confident that this update will create a more efficient and personalized travel process for everyone involved. Thank you for your cooperation as we implement this new policy.
